Robbers dug a tunnel of more than 30 meters into a bank

Berlin fire fighters called on Monday to an underground garage put out a blaze only to find a 30-metre-long tunnel leading to the vaults of a nearby bank - which had been emptied.

The fire, which police believe was begun by the thieves in an attempt to erase any evidence and cause a distraction while they robbed the bank, broke out at around 6:15 am a regional paper reported.

The thieves had smashed through reinforced concrete to dig their tunnel, meaning they must have had access to heavy duty equipment.

Police were still examining the scene in the Steglitz area of the capital on Monday (14th January) afternoon and are yet to have found any clues pointing to suspects, despite thorough questioning of people living in the area.

Exactly how much money was stolen from the Volksbank branch has not been revealed and police said they had no idea where the ground excavated from the tunnel had ended up.

A similar incident took place in the southern part of Berlin in 1995, when an 11-strong gang tunnelled into a bank in Zehlendorf and took 16 hostages as well as several million euros.

Today the annual Corruption Perceptions Index 2012 was published. The ranking was very interesting for me.



The country with the least corruption in Africa is Botswana, it was ranked number 30 even before Spain( 30) and Italy(72). Ghana (64), Togo (128), Kenya and Nigeria shared (139). Most corrupt country, and also the bottom of the list is Somalia (174).
Denmark, Finland and New Zealand share the top spot!

Happy reunification Germany!

Today the Federal Republic of Germany celebrates its 22-year reunion. The reunification of West and East Germany was already on 30. November 1989, this was the date the wall fell. But the 30th Novermber was a black day in the German history. On this day in 1938, more than 400 Jews were killed by the Nazi regime. Therefore, the Federal Republic of Germany relocate their reunion on the Oct 03.

I now live for 19 years in Germany and I think that Germany has changed much for the better. When I came to Germany with a very young age, I felt very strange but I quickly found friends, but parents especially the older generation was very reserved. There were also quite often racist sayings, which has now become very rare. All in All  one can say that the Germans are much more open to strangers. I feel very well in Germany now, I have many friends and I feel partially as German. So therefore Happy reunification!
